AN AFTERNOON AT THE BARLEY MERCHANT WITH TIM LAHAY

It’s been well over a year since The Barley Merchant opened their doors to a lot of fanfare, and we finally made the short trip out to Langley to check it out. Our pal Tim (@crafttourist), Head Chef Hiran Perera, and their team of 100 have been hard at work.

Since opening, they’ve flowed almost one thousand unique BC beers and ciders through their taps, have crafted an mouth-watering food menu with an elevated approach to pub fare, and have created a lively atmosphere that keeps locals coming back.

Anyone who’s spent time with Tim has witnessed his passion for the BC craft beverage industry. Having hung out with him at numerous beer related events over the last decade, it wasn’t a surprise when he announced that he was opening a craft beer focused space. It just made sense. But his twenty plus years of experience in the hospitality industry and love for local beer aside, building a restaurant during the pandemic was a herculean effort with a few false starts.

Tim was gracious enough to share the origin story of The Barley Merchant with us on The Dregs Podcast. This was a really eye-opening conversation on the process of opening a new restaurant. We hope you enjoy!
